History of the museum

1istoriya_01aThe museum’s history began on 20 March 1945 when the Council of People’s Commissars of the Ukrainian SSR and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine decided to create ‘Kyiv Battlefield’ museum-reserve. Honouring the memory of Kyiv liberation heroes, the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR on 5 May 1954 declared the territory of the former command post of the First Ukrainian front a state reserve.

On 28 March 1957 the Government of the Ukrainian SSR made a decision to construct a monument-museum of Kyiv liberation on the reserve territory. Not later than in 1958 these plans were turned into reality. On the 35th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic war (4 May 1980) the diorama ‘Battle for Kyiv. Lyutizh bridgehead. 1943’ was opened in the restored Sviato-Pokrovska church in Novi Petrivtsi village.
In the early 70’s with the help of veteran organizations a Memorial Park was initiated. The park’s flora includes 70 rare tree species that were brought from the most famous Ukrainian dendrological parks: Sofiyivka and Oleksandriya. This park is one of the largest cultivated dendroflora centres in Kyiv Polissya region.
